Plum Tree

Contributed by Affan Faisal, Canada

Plums are a very attractive crop that needs a little pruning and can reach up to 4or 5 meters high. In a well drained soil and with good air circulation they should produce within 3 to 5 years. Pollination of plums is complex.
Fresh plums have almost nothing in common with grocery ones, which are harvested way too long before maturity, not having built up their complex sugars. Plums have an amazingly sweet and good flavor. European plums tend to be better than the other ones in cooking.
Plum tree flowers grow in the early spring.  At that time a plum tree will covered in blossoms. In a good year half of the flowers will be pollinated and become plums. If the weather is too dry, the plums will not develop but will fall from the tree while still tiny green buds. Plums can be red, purple, black, blue, brown and yellow.
